The indie outfit Tashaki Miyaki crafts hazy guitar pop through the collaborative efforts of vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Paige Stark alongside guitarist Luke Paquin of Hot Hot Heat. The pair first crossed paths in Los Angeles during 2004, though several years passed before they formally launched the project. Both belonged to a local network of musicians that also encompassed producer and multi-instrumentalist Jon Brion as well as Joel Jerome. Prior to forming Tashaki Miyaki, they each contributed to separate endeavors, with Stark frequently recording under alternate names. Their self-titled debut EP eventually surfaced on the U.K. imprint the Sounds of Sweet Nothing in 2011, followed by a U.S. cassette edition from Burger Records in 2013. The 2012 covers collection Under Cover gathered renditions of material originally recorded by Sam Cooke, INXS, and Father John Misty, while Under Cover, Vol. 2 appeared as a free download three years later. Bassist Dora Hiller joined the sessions for the group’s first proper album, The Dream, which Stark produced and Metropolis Records issued in April 2017.
