King Tuff's Kyle Thomas maintains a busy schedule as a guitarist and producer, lending his skills to projects by J Mascis, Hand Habits, and Hunx in addition to shaping his own discography that reflects deep familiarity with flashy, theatrical rock & roll. Early efforts such as the 2008 release Was Dead pulled riffs and melodies from power pop, the British Invasion, fuzzy psychedelia, and punk, resulting in tracks that carried the distinct aroma of convenience-store warming trays. By 2018's The Other, Thomas had moved past his wild-party image to examine personal depths and reduce sonic density, a direction he extended alongside Sasami Ashworth on the nearly guitar-free 2023 album Smalltown Stardust, a wistful indie-pop collection steeped in memory.

Thomas adopted the stage name during adolescence as a twist on his initials combined with the moniker King Tut, then issued his first recordings under Tuff in 2006 through a self-released CD-R while performing alongside the eccentric folk-revival group Feathers and J Mascis' heavy stoner-metal outfit Witch. The official debut album Was Dead appeared in October 2008 on Colonel Records, bringing his hook-driven lo-fi material to wider attention. After road work with Hunx & His Punx and Witch plus an album from his eccentric power-pop band Happy Birthday, Thomas shelved the Tuff endeavor until a 2011 split single with Hex Dispensers. The following year he delivered the standalone track "Wild Desire" through Suicide Squeeze before signing with Sub Pop, whose 2012 release King Tuff broadened his range to incorporate '50s retro-pop, '60s pop, and '70s glam. He followed with the 2014 album Black Moon Spell, a dense blast of glam and funky garage pop overseen by the Go's Bobby Harlow.

Exhausted after extensive touring and the growing gap between his on-stage persona and everyday life, Thomas returned to fundamentals by composing reflective material suited to solo acoustic performances and handling production himself at home. Though introspective, the vibrant and psychedelic The Other emerged in 2018 with contributions from Ty Segall on drums, Mikal Cronin on saxes, and backing vocalists Kevin Morby and Jenny Lewis. Upon returning to Los Angeles from early 2019 tour dates, Thomas started composing material centered on his adolescence in Brattleboro, Vermont. For recording he enlisted housemate Sasami Ashworth, and together with Hand Habits' Meg Duffy they formed an informal creative group that exchanged work on their respective projects at Thomas' studio amid the initial COVID-19 lockdown. Thomas appeared on SASAMI's 2021 album Fun House and the 2022 Hand Habits release Fun House. On the 2023 King Tuff album Smalltown Stardust, Thomas and Ashworth—who performed on and co-wrote the majority of the tracks—wove cellos, violins, keys, and vocal harmonies into a glowing backdrop for the reflective, reassuring lyrics.
