Biography
Fuzz draw their sonic approach from the raw, distortion-heavy proto-metal and psychedelic sounds of 1960s acts such as the Groundhogs, Jimi Hendrix, and Blue Cheer. Ty Segall and occasional collaborator Charles Moothart launched the group, whose recordings blend a minimal yet massively distorted aesthetic that evokes 1972-era production, most notably on the Steve Albini-engineered III from 2020.
The project began as a duo with Moothart handling vocals and guitar while Segall played drums and sang, later adding longtime associate Roland Cosio on bass. Their first releases were limited-edition 7"s for In the Red and Trouble in Mind that sold out at once, followed by a self-titled LP in late 2013. That same year saw the appearance of the live EP Live in San Francisco on Castle Face Records, the imprint run by Thee Oh Sees' John Dwyer. Segall took a break from the band in 2014 to focus on his other work. Replacing Cosio with Chad Ubovich of Meatbodies, the lineup issued Fuzz II in fall 2015 and toured the United States behind it.
In subsequent years the musicians concentrated on separate endeavors—Segall on his solo catalog, Moothart with CFM, both together in GØGGS, and Ubovich with Meatbodies—before reconvening to track new material with Steve Albini, whose engineering preserved the group's live power through sparse overdubs. The sessions produced III, their most intense and Black Sabbath-inflected album yet, which In the Red Records released in October 2020.
