Biography
Los Angeles-based rock trio L.A. Witch revolves around vocalist and guitarist Sade Sanchez, delivering a sound steeped in gothic atmosphere. Their self-titled 2017 debut generated substantial early attention by spotlighting a hardened touring edge that invited comparisons to leather-clad acts such as the Kills, the Jesus and Mary Chain, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.
Sanchez launched the project in 2013 alongside bassist Irita Pai and drummer Ellie English. Raised in the Valley bordering North Hollywood, she picked up guitar at age 15 and soon immersed herself in punk, drawn especially to the horror-tinged approach of the Misfits, the Cramps, and Dead Moon as well as alt-rock groups including Gun Club, the Jesus and Mary Chain, and Spacemen 3. During those years she met English, and the pair performed together, even claiming victory in a battle of the bands at Burbank High where English was enrolled. Following graduation their paths split, prompting Sanchez to form the noise-rock band Silver Drones with Pai. Eventually she reconnected with English, and by 2015 Silver Drones had transformed into the trio L.A. Witch. The group embarked on near-constant touring that year, sustaining it for three years and accumulating further likenesses to their key influences.
The independent debut L.A. Witch arrived in 2017 and reinforced interest in their moody rock style. Their EP Octubre followed in 2019. In August 2020 the band issued their second album, Play with Fire, which pursued a more aggressive direction while exploring blues and country textures.
