Biography
French duo the Limiñanas fuse rumbling fuzzy organ lines, sharp twanging guitar riffs, half-spoken half-sung vocals, and warm vintage analog textures to evoke the sleek cool of 1960s French pop while steering it toward fresh territory shaped by Italian film scores, psychedelia, Suicide, and country blues. Their self-titled 2010 debut set the foundational blueprint, after which each new effort refined that approach through subtle variations. Costa Blanca from 2013 demonstrated a delicate acoustic emphasis, whereas the glossy neo-psychedelic Malamore in 2016 illustrated how the pair could stretch their palette without abandoning their roots.
Drummer and occasional singer Marie Limiñana anchors the project alongside Lionel Limiñana, who handles bass, organ, and multiple other roles; the duo regularly invite outside vocalists and musicians onto their sessions. Following their introductory “I’m Dead” single in 2010, they issued the self-titled Trouble in Mind LP; a steady stream of 7-inches preceded the arrival of their sophomore album Crystal Anis in summer 2012. After pausing to weave additional French and Italian soundtrack influences into their framework, the pair delivered their third Trouble in Mind release, Costa Blanca, in 2013.
A 2014 compilation of singles and obscurities titled I’ve Got Trouble in Mind: 7" and Rare Stuff 2009/2014 preceded their 2015 collaboration with guitarist Pascal Comelade on the Because Music album Traité de Guitarres Triolectiques. Malamore appeared the following year and spotlighted Comelade on one track plus former New Order bassist Peter Hook on another. After the late-2017 EP Istanbul Is Sleepy, recorded with Brian Jonestown Massacre’s Anton Newcombe, the Limiñanas returned with Shadow People; that characteristically atmospheric set included appearances by Hook, actress Emmanuelle Seigner, Newcombe (who also produced), and French vocalist Bertrand Belin. Because Music put the album out in early 2018, the same year a second anthology, I’ve Got Trouble in Mind, Vol. 2: 7" and Rare Stuff 2015/2018, reached stores. In 2019 the duo scored Pierre Creton’s film Le Bel Été (A Beautiful Summer), featuring singer/songwriter Étienne Daho on its central theme “One Blood Circle.”
