Biography
Samia crafts angsty indie rock as an alternative singer and songwriter, blending relaxed melodies with candid personal observations. Her earliest singles surfaced in 2017, leading to the arrival of debut album The Baby in 2020. The relationship-focused Honey and its charting title track arrived in 2023. Over the following two years she issued additional singles, opening 2025 with "Bovine Excision."
Born in New York, Samia Finnerty began composing songs, performing with groups, and appearing at open mikes while still in her mid-teens. As the child of actress Kathy Najimy and actor/musician Dan Finnerty (the Dan Band), she also took up acting; at age 19 in 2016 she performed in the off-Broadway debut of Sarah DeLappe’s Pulitzer Prize-nominated play The Wolves. A cameo on the Fox series Gotham came in 2017. While still developing her music, Samia issued the guitar-based track “Welcome to Eden” later that year, followed by fully arranged band recordings throughout the next twelve months.
During 2019 she joined Cold War Kids on tour, supported Soccer Mommy for one date, and appeared at festivals such as SXSW and Firefly. That August her debut EP, Ode to Artifice, collected earlier material including “Someone Tell the Boys” and “The Night Josh Tillman Listened to My Song.” Around the same period she recorded several new cover versions, among them songs originally by Liz Phair and Daniel Johnston. Samia’s first full-length, The Baby, was released on the independent label Grand Jury in August 2020. Caleb Hinz, Lars Stalfors, and Hippo Campus members Jake Luppen and Nathan Stocker handled production duties.
The following January, The Baby Reimagined presented remixes and reinterpretations of the album by Field Medic, Palehound, and Bartees Strange. On her next EP, Scout, issued in August 2021, Samia contributed her own version of When in Rome’s “The Promise” with indie soul singer and rapper Jelani Aryeh; Boone Wallace and Andy Seltzer (IAN SWEET, Chelsea Cutler) produced the project. Subsequent tours placed her on bills alongside Lucy Dacus and Courtney Barnett.
Reuniting with Hinz, Samia traveled to Betty’s, the North Carolina studio run by frequent touring partners Sylvan Esso, to lay down her second album, Honey. Issued by Grand Jury in January 2023, the record included guest appearances by musician friends Christian Lee Hutson and Briston Maroney and scored a charting single with its title track. After several non-album releases such as 2024’s “Making Breakfast,” Samia began her next album cycle with the 2025 song “Bovine Excision.”
