Formed in South Wales during 2014, the melodic post-hardcore outfit Casey originated when vocalist Tom Weaver and lead guitarist Liam Torrance, each previously active in regional groups, established the project under the initial moniker Well Wisher. Weaver had begun his musical path on guitar yet soon recognized that the instrument limited his desired self-expression, prompting him to focus instead on lyric writing. The lineup expanded with the addition of rhythm guitarist Toby Evans, bassist Scott Edwards—who would later be succeeded by Adam Smith—and drummer Max Nicolai. Together the musicians composed material and issued the self-released single “Haze.” Not long afterward the group adopted the name Casey and cultivated an audience through consistent live performances. Momentum generated by their independently released 2015 single “Fade” secured a deal with Hassle Records, which issued the band’s intense debut album Love Is Not Enough in 2016. That record, which traced the painful dissolution of a romantic partnership, earned widespread critical praise and earned the band appearances at major British festivals such as Download and Reading & Leeds. Casey’s 2018 follow-up, Where I Go When I Am Sleeping, adopted a denser, broader, and more intricate sonic palette whose words examined Weaver’s ongoing battles with the mental and physical ailments that have accompanied him throughout his life.
