Biography
Melodic hardcore outfit Hundredth packages messages of hope and anti-violence within an intense, ferocious sound. The ensemble came together during 2008 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, when guitarist Alex Blackwell and bassist Matt Koontz resumed activities from their earlier project, also called the Hundredth, alongside vocalist Chadwick Johnson and guitarist Joel Gunter before bassist Michael Raymo completed the lineup. Within a year the musicians had issued an EP on their own and honed their live skills locally, prompting a deal with Mediaskare and the start of work on a debut album. After Gunter departed for other pursuits, the finished effort, When Will We Surrender, surfaced in November 2010. Shared bills alongside Betrayal, A Plea for Purging, and Venia helped expand their reach while they prepared the follow-up Let Go, which appeared in fall 2011 and reached the Billboard Heatseekers chart thanks to its heightened emotional and melodic direction.
In 2012 the musicians established the nonprofit Hope Into Humanity, an effort that included collaborative fundraising with supporters to supply clean drinking water to communities in need. Around the same period Blackwell exited and was succeeded by Blake Hardman. Two EPs followed in quick succession: Revolt in 2013 and Resist in 2014. Toward the end of 2014 the band announced its signing to Hopeless Records, which issued the third long-player, Free, the next year. That same year Hundredth appeared on the Vans Warped Tour. Hardman stepped away in 2016, allowing original guitarist Blackwell to rejoin. The quartet returned in 2017 with its fourth studio album, Rare, which included the single “Neurotic.”
