Biography
Walls of Jericho originated in Detroit, Michigan, as a metalcore outfit distinguished by Candace Kucsulain’s screamed vocals yet equally defined by their seamless fusion of old-school hardcore, thrash metal, and “chugga-chugga” metalcore, delivered with an intensity few peers matched. The group coalesced in September 1998 from the remnants of Earth Mover, uniting Kucsulain on vocals with Wes Keely on drums, Chris Rawson on guitar, Aaron Ruby on bass, and Mike Hasty on guitar. Shortly afterward they began performing across the Midwest alongside Buried Alive, Hatebreed, Racetraitor, Brother’s Keeper, and Reach the Sky. In April 1999 they issued a 7" EP on Underestimated; Genet Records soon followed with the CD EP A Day and a Thousand Years, which compiled that 7" alongside earlier demo recordings.
International hardcore circles took notice as the band sustained its touring schedule, prompting interest from both Ferret and Trustkill Records. Walls of Jericho ultimately signed with Trustkill, which released their first full-length, The Bound Feed the Gagged, in December 1999. Throughout 2000 they worked the touring and festival circuit, including an August U.S. run supporting Syracuse, New York straight-edgers Earth Crisis, melodic Swedish death metal act In Flames, and Oakland, California’s metallic Skinlab. After further road work in 2001, the departure of their drummer to a more prominent band left the lineup in flux; unable to secure a suitable replacement, the members disbanded, with Kucsulain apprenticing as a body piercer while the remaining musicians formed It’s All Gone to Hell.
Reconvening two years later, Walls of Jericho welcomed drummer Alexi Rodriquez, formerly of Catharsis, and resumed activity with renewed purpose. Their sophomore album, All Hail the Dead, surfaced on Trustkill in early 2004, prompting another intensive touring phase. When Rodriquez departed in December of that year, the band quickly enlisted longtime friend Dustin Schoenhofer, previously of Premonitions of War, who joined in early 2005. Spring 2006 brought shows with Bullet for My Valentine and a Canadian stint alongside All That Remains and Unearth, followed by an appearance on the second stage of that summer’s Ozzfest. Recorded in Cleveland with producer Ben Schigel of Zao and Chimaira, the third full-length, With Devils Amongst Us All, also arrived that summer. The band’s fourth studio album, American Dream, emerged in 2008 and entered the Heatseekers chart at No. 11. Following an extended hiatus devoted to personal and professional matters, Walls of Jericho returned in 2016 with their fifth LP, No One Can Save You from Yourself, issued through Napalm Records.
