Biography
Ignite, a socially and politically aware hardcore quartet from Orange County, first surfaced in 1993 with a sound that fused raw aggression and melodic rock textures. Commercial traction arrived in 2000 via the band’s third album, A Place Called Home, after which sustained international devotion has been fueled by high-intensity, welcoming live shows and subsequent releases such as Our Darkest Days in 2006 and A War Against You in 2016.
Since forming in 1993, the singular vocal presence of frontman Zoli Teglas—who spent his formative years in both Hungary and L.A.—has defined the group’s unyielding artistic direction. Because Teglas’s brother works as a wildlife preservation veterinarian, the singer has championed environmental causes and vegetarianism, themes that recur throughout the breakthrough 2000 album A Place Called Home. Aligning with organizations including Earth First, Doctors Without Borders, and Sea Shepherds, Ignite has staged multiple benefit concerts whose proceeds supported those and additional groups.
Prior to their May 2000 TVT debut with A Place Called Home, the band issued several singles and demos along with two earlier full-length projects: Call on My Brothers in 1995 and the Past Our Means EP in 1996. At that point the lineup consisted of Teglas, bassist Brett Rasmussen, guitarist Brian Balchack (who had taken over from Joe D. Foster), and drummer Craig Anderson (who replaced Casey Jones). Building a committed audience abroad, Ignite toured heavily through the late 1990s, including European stops on the Vans Warped Tour, appearances at the U.K.’s Reading Festival, Hungary’s Pepsi Sziget Festival, and Sweden’s Hultsfred Festival, plus shared bills with Pennywise and Sick of It All. In 2000 Teglas briefly assumed lead vocals for a reunited, touring edition of the Misfits. After parting ways with TVT in 2001, Teglas and Rasmussen joined the side project California United—formed with the Lonely Kings’ Jon Barrysmith and Jet Lag’s Nik Hill—for a series of European dates in 2003.
Returning to Ignite activity, the members played their first U.S. concerts in two years during early summer 2004 before embarking on worldwide dates. They signed with Abacus Recordings in mid-2005, entered the studio that fall, and delivered Our Darkest Days in May 2006; by then second guitarist Nik Hill had joined, and the band supported the album alongside Rise Against, Blacklisted, and Set Your Goals. The long-awaited follow-up A War Against You arrived in tandem with the 2016 EMP Persistence Tour, which Ignite headlined.
Teglas departed the group in 2020 to concentrate on music and animal rescue, launching the new project Ocean Hills, whose debut album appeared later that year.
