Less Than Jake originated in 1992 as a power pop trio marked by strong punk influences before evolving into a ska-infused punk outfit known for its comedic edge and obsession with Pez dispensers. Commercial success peaked for the group in 2003 via its fifth studio album, Anthem, which logged 12 weeks on the Billboard 200. The musicians launched Sleep It Off Records in 2008 and used the imprint to deliver multiple albums and EPs until aligning with Fat Wreck Chords for the Billboard-charting See the Light in 2013. Still anchored in the third-wave ska resurgence they helped spark, the band delivered its eighth studio album, Silver Linings, in 2020.

Chris Demakes on vocals and guitar, bassist Shaun, and drummer plus lyricist Vinnie Fiorello established the band’s initial lineup in Gainesville, Florida. Shaun later shifted to roadie duties and was succeeded by Roger Manganelli, who learned bass specifically for the role. The ensemble welcomed its earliest horn section member, Jessica Mills, across 1993 and 1994, followed shortly by trombonist Buddy Schaub. Schaub departed for Europe with companions just prior to the first tour, prompting saxophonist Derron Nuhfer to handle those dates in his stead.

After several 7-inch singles, Less Than Jake issued its debut full-length, Pezcore, on Dill Records in 1994. Losers, Kings & Things We Don't Understand and Greased appeared next on No Idea before the band moved to Capitol for its major-label bow, Losing Streak, in 1996. That record showcased the group’s sharp, rapid ska-punk anthems and featured enduring tracks such as “Johnny Quest Thinks We're Sellouts” and “Jen Doesn't Like Me Anymore.” Jessica exited after the sessions to enter teaching, while ex-Slapstick trombonist Pete joined; around the same period Fiorello co-founded Fueled by Ramen with John Janick. Hello Rockview arrived in 1998 and yielded the modest college-radio success “History of a Boring Town.” Fall 2000 brought Borders & Boundaries on Fat Wreck along with support slots on Bon Jovi’s North American trek.

Following the recording, Nuhfer departed (later joining Gunmoll) and was replaced by ex-Spring Heel Jack horn player Pete Wasilewski, nicknamed JR to distinguish him from the existing Pete, who himself exited shortly after the 2001 Warped Tour yet left the nickname in place. Countless 7-inch and limited vinyl releases prompted the members to gather selected tracks for the 2002 compilation Goodbye Blue and White, titled after their first tour van. Anthem emerged on Sire in 2003, followed a year later by B Is for B-Sides, which gathered songs omitted from Anthem. The DVD retrospective People’s History of Less Than Jake surfaced the next month. April 2006 saw the four-track EP Absolution for Idiots and Addicts, with full-length In with the Out Crowd arriving the subsequent month; its polished, pop-leaning sound drew divided listener responses. After parting ways with Warner Bros. in 2007, the band formed Sleep It Off and released GNV FLA in 2008, an album inspired by and dedicated to their hometown. Ninth album See the Light arrived in fall 2013. Continued interest in EPs led to the seven-song Sound the Alarm in 2017, their first release for Pure Noise Records. Three years afterward they returned with eighth studio album Silver Linings.
