Suburban Legends distinguished themselves among third-wave ska acts through meticulously synchronized dance routines that accompanied full performances, securing them recurring outdoor performance slots entertaining evening crowds at Disneyland throughout summer and holiday periods. The Anaheim residency sharpened the group’s stagecraft, resulting in roughly 1,000 shows during 2002 alone. The Orange, California ska-punk ensemble formed in 2000 and issued its self-produced, self-titled debut EP the next year; strong local support tied to the Disneyland appearances drove sales past 20,000 units and drew the notice of Oingo Boingo’s John Avila, who subsequently produced the band’s follow-up. Rump Shaker arrived in 2003, featuring vocalist Tim Maurer, trumpeters Vincent Walker and Aaron Bertram, trombonists Ryan Dallas Cook and Brian Robertson, guitarist Brian Klemm, bassist Chris Maurer, and drummer Derek Lee Rock. Extensive national touring followed over the ensuing years alongside the Toasters, Big D & the Kids Table, and Reel Big Fish. The 2004 live CD/DVD Season One documented videos, stage footage, and seldom-heard material, elevating the band’s profile within ska circles. Tragedy struck in October 2005 when Ryan Dallas Cook was fatally struck by a drunk driver while riding his motorcycle home from a late rehearsal. Devastated, the members established a memorial fund supporting Cook’s former high-school music program before resuming activity. Departures of both Maurers and Bertram occurred by 2006, prompting Vincent Walker’s shift to lead vocals and the addition of bassist Mike Hachey, trumpeter Luis Beza, and trombonist Phillip Inzerillo to complete the seven-piece lineup. That same year the group released the six-song EP Dance Like Nobody’s Watching and remained on the road through year’s end.
