The Skoidats formed as a ska-punk outfit rooted in Missoula, Montana. Their moniker nods to the Oi!-tinged edges within the songs, though the members themselves hold no racist views. The core lineup came together in Helena during 1995, featuring guitarist and vocalist Justin Dillavou alongside bassist Chuck Fuller, drummer Gardner Dunn, and tenor saxophonist Josh Crenz. After relocating to Missoula, the group expanded with two University of Montana marching band alumni—tenor saxophonist John Chapman and trombonist John Knight—rounding out the roster. Once signed to Moon Ska, they issued their first full-length record, The Times, in 1997. Crenz departed soon afterward to enlist in the military, leaving the rest of the band to deliver Cure for What Ales You in 1999.
