Pulley, the Southern California punk revival outfit, originated after vocalist Scott Radinsky parted ways with Ten Foot Pole. That departure stemmed from the group’s insistence on a frontman able to devote himself entirely to music, since Radinsky also worked as a major-league relief pitcher who had appeared for the Los Angeles Dodgers and other clubs. The original roster placed Jordan Burns, an ex-Ten Foot Pole member who had played with Radinsky in the earlier band Scared Straight and who continues to perform with Strung Out, behind the drums. Guitarists included Jim Cherry, who had previously handled bass for Strung Out, and Mike Harder, who logged a brief time in Scared Straight. Bassist Matt Riddle arrived from Face to Face.

Epitaph issued the band’s debut, Esteem Driven Engine, in 1996. Riddle then shifted his full attention to No Use for a Name, prompting Tyler Rebbe to take over on bass. The next release, 60 Cycle Hum, surfaced in 1997, followed by the self-titled third album in 1999. Cherry left the lineup before sessions began for Together Again for the First Time, which appeared in fall 2001. He died the following summer from a heart condition that had affected him since birth.

Matters, the April 2004 album produced by Matt Hyde (Slayer, No Doubt) rather than longtime collaborator Ryan Greene, became the first Pulley record made without Greene at the controls. By then the group consisted of Radinsky, Harder, Rebbe, drummer Tony Palermo, and guitarist Jim Blowers.
