Hardcore punk rock outfit Only Crime first appeared in 2002, though its lineup already consisted of seasoned veterans drawn from across the broader rock landscape. Vocalist Russ Rankin of Good Riddance, guitarist Aaron Dalbec of Bane and Converge, drummer Bill Stevenson of Descendents, ALL, and Black Flag, guitarist Zach Blair of GWAR and Hagfish, and bassist Doni Blair of Hagfish and Armstrong formed the group. Frustrated with the state of their existing projects, Rankin and Dalbec first considered joining forces while supporting a summer tour shared by Good Riddance and Bane. The two Blairs soon joined, and once Stevenson completed the roster, Only Crime began operating in earnest. Performances alongside Dropkick Murphys preceded the July 2004 release of their debut full-length, To the Nines, on Fat Wreck. Subsequent dates with Stretch Armstrong, the Suicide Machines, Strung Out, and Avail ensued, while the band also supplied a song to the second Rock Against Bush compilation. Later the members regrouped at Stevenson’s the Blasting Room studio in Colorado to record the follow-up album Virulence, issued in January 2007.
