Paint It Black's robust, pinch-hitting post-grunge aesthetic took shape inside Philadelphia's middle-class neighborhoods in 2000. Lifetime guitarist Dan Yemin, also known as Kid Dynamite, pursued a new musical direction apart from his earlier bands and enlisted longtime friend David Wagenschutz—drummer for Good Riddance—along with guitarist Dave Hause and bassist Andy Nelson to launch the project. Jade Tree offered the group a deal in 2002, resulting in the debut album CVA the next summer. Hause exited in late 2003 to start The Loved Ones, after which Paint It Black delivered its second album, Paradise, in March 2005. Further personnel shifts left the band, by 2006, consisting of Yemin, Wagenschutz, bassist Andrew Mackie, and guitarist Joshua Agran. Wagenschutz parted amicably that summer and played his last show with the group in late July. None More Black drummer Jared Shavelson covered their European tour with New Mexican Disaster Squad while a permanent replacement was located, then remained as a full member. Paint It Black issued New Lexicon on Jade Tree Records in February 2008.
