Biography
Hailing from Santa Barbara, California, the post-hardcore and pop-punk outfit Versus the World assembled personnel from the Ataris and Lagwagon before unveiling its self-titled debut full-length in 2005. Blending those two styles, the band delivered its second album, Drink. Sing. Live. Love., during 2010 and then issued Homesick/Roadsick five years later.
Donald Spence, who handles vocals and songwriting, joined forces with longtime Ataris bassist Mike Davenport to launch Versus the World in 2005; earlier the pair had played occasional acoustic sets as Pencapchew. That same year the newly christened group released its initial studio album, after which it toured alongside No Use for a Name, Suicide Machines, Bouncing Souls, and Social Distortion while also performing on the Vans Warped Tour. Subsequent side projects occupied the members until 2010, when Spence and Davenport reassembled the lineup with drummer Bryan Charlson of Crooks and Liars plus guitarist Chris Flippin from Lagwagon. The following year brought the fiery single “In Fear of Finale,” which preceded the 2012 sophomore album Drink. Sing. Live. Love. Kung Fu Records put out Homesick/Roadsick in 2015. A deluxe reissue of the band’s eponymous debut appeared in 2022.
