In 2007 JJ Peters, previously the drummer for I Killed the Prom Queen, launched Deez Nuts in Melbourne, Australia, borrowing the name from a Dr. Dre track. Blending the aggression of hardcore punk with hip-hop sensibilities, the band centered its songs on revelry and street-level ambition, a stance underscored when their first album, the 2008 release Stay True, included a cover of the Beastie Boys’ “Fight for Your Right.” Most of that year was spent on the road throughout Australia and Europe, after which the second album, This One’s for You, surfaced in 2010. Bout It, the third full-length, arrived in 2013 and showcased an array of guest appearances by hardcore-scene figures, among them members of Architects, Madball, and Suicide Silence. Their fourth effort, Word Is Bond, followed in 2015 and turned toward more inward-looking themes while dialing back the earlier party focus. The fifth studio album, Binge & Purgatory, emerged in 2017 and was preceded by the singles “Commas & Zeroes,” “Discord,” and “Purgatory.” Two years afterward came You Got Me Fucked Up, an outing marked by richer production that merged propulsive heaviness with buoyant pop hooks.
