Biography
Emerging from Warren, Michigan, the hardcore outfit I See Stars launched their career in 2006 by fusing screamo intensity with electronica textures. The lineup consists of Devin Oliver handling clean vocals, Andrew Oliver managing unclean vocals along with keys, programming, and percussion, Brent Allen on guitars, and Jeff Valentine on bass. Ahead of inking a deal with Sumerian Records in 2008, the group issued the EP Green Light Go along with various demo recordings. Working alongside producers Cameron Mizzell and James Paul Wisner—whose résumés encompass Paramore, Dashboard Confessional, and New Found Glory—they unveiled their first full-length effort, 3-D, in 2009. That album leaned toward a post-hardcore approach without yet folding in the digital dance components that would later become central. Guest appearances included Bizzy Bone on the track “Sing This!,” and the release climbed to number 176 on the Billboard 200. Following several personnel shifts, the band delivered The End of the World Party two years afterward, shifting toward a darker electronicore palette. Digital Renegade sustained the hardcore-dance momentum in 2012, enlisting Danny Worsnop (ex-Asking Alexandria) and Cassadee Pope (ex-Hey Monday) as guests, while separate instrumental and remix editions also surfaced. New Demons arrived in 2013 and infused the I See Stars aesthetic with an electronic trap bounce, reaching number 28 on the Billboard 200—their strongest showing to date. Two remix projects followed in 2015: one reworking selections from New Demons and another titled Phases, which recast earlier material in acoustic and orchestral arrangements while adding covers of songs by Daughter, Disclosure, and Hozier. Their fifth album, Treehouse, surfaced on Sumerian in summer 2016; the genre-blurring set entered the Top Ten on the Hard Rock, Alternative, and Independent charts. Early 2018 brought Treehouse (Acoustic), presenting pastoral renditions of seven tracks from the prior release.
