Biography
Chuck Cleaver fronted Cincinnati band Ass Ponys as guitarist and vocalist, carving out space in the early 1990s indie rock scene through their distinctive skewed country-rock approach. By upending typical rock and country norms, the ensemble delivered a quirky and unconventional viewpoint. Following a pair of independent records, Ass Ponys inked a contract with A&M Records and issued their first major-label effort, Electric Rock Music, during 1994; Known Universe appeared two years later. A prolonged break ensued, during which the act parted ways with A&M, before they inked an agreement with the alternative country imprint Checkered Past. Lohio emerged as a celebratory yet somewhat melancholic comeback. In 2005, the collection Okra Years came out.
