Neutral Milk Hotel rose to prominence in indie rock through the singular force of their songs, despite a modest catalog and an erratic path that mirrored the music's own unpredictability. Jeff Mangum, the group's founder and central creative force, shaped material that probed faith, spirituality, sexuality, and death through eccentric, wholly personal perspectives. His direct, unadorned folk melodies arrived wrapped in dense layers of distortion and sonic force, lending an ethereal quality to the two studio albums—On Avery Island from 1996 and In the Aeroplane Over the Sea from 1998—both of which earned lasting critical reverence and devoted fandom as essential, even redemptive works. Following a 1998 hiatus just as a devoted audience was coalescing, the band returned for a limited touring period spanning 2013 to 2015; assorted compilations and limited releases surfaced over the years as their influence expanded, culminating in the 2023 collection The Collected Works of Neutral Milk Hotel that gathered the bulk of their widely circulated recordings.

The project originated in late-'80s Ruston, Louisiana, where teenager Jeff Mangum recorded under the name Milk alongside high-school peers Bill Doss, Will Hart, and Robert Schneider. Those early experiments in homemade sound would seed the Elephant 6 collective, beginning with the four friends exchanging tapes of their lo-fi creations. After graduation Mangum relocated to Athens, Georgia, continuing to record yet adopting the Neutral Milk Hotel moniker once he discovered another act already using the name Milk. The initial semi-public release arrived in 1993 via the Hype-City Soundtrack cassette, also among Elephant 6's earliest offerings; the 7" EP Everything Is followed the same year, drawing the attention of Merge Records, which offered the group a deal. At this stage Neutral Milk Hotel functioned primarily as Mangum's solitary recording endeavor, assembled piecemeal with assistance from assorted collaborators. Relocating to Denver, Colorado, to track the proper debut On Avery Island alongside producer Robert Schneider, Mangum transformed the long-standing project into a complete performing unit by recruiting drummer Jeremy Barnes, bassist Julian Koster, and multi-instrumentalist Scott Spillane. The newly formed quartet settled in New York to prepare for live dates, and Merge issued On Avery Island in March 1996, where it achieved notable success for an independent debut by an unknown act.

Following 1997 tours the musicians returned to Denver to cut their follow-up with Schneider once more, this time working as a complete ensemble. Merge released In the Aeroplane Over the Sea in February 1998, and it initially mirrored the debut's modest commercial showing. The production displayed greater refinement, while the ensemble arrangements delved further into chamber-pop textures, carnival-like flourishes, and Beatlesque psychedelia, contrasting the more fragmented and demanding approach of On Avery Island. Audience enthusiasm built steadily, becoming evident in growing attendance at performances. This surge of attention quickly took a toll on Mangum's well-being, as intensely devoted listeners often pressed him about lyrical meanings. After an October 1998 concert in London he retreated from public view, bringing all band activity to an abrupt halt.

During the ensuing silence the group, Mangum, and In the Aeroplane Over the Sea attained near-mythic stature among listeners captivated by the record's dreamlike imagery and indelible melodies. Sales persisted long after release, accompanied by mounting critical examinations of both the band and its reclusive architect. The 2001 album Live at Jittery Joe's documented a solo performance Mangum gave in Athens in 1997, shortly before the Neutral Milk Hotel tours supporting In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. Mangum reemerged with occasional solo appearances in 2008, followed by full solo tours in 2011 and 2012. That same year a vinyl box set compiling most of the band's output appeared, incorporating newly recorded material from the Ferris Wheel On Fire EP. The original four-piece lineup reconvened for touring between 2013 and 2015, after which members indicated further reunions were improbable. In 2023 the 2011 box set received a digital edition titled The Collected Works of Neutral Milk Hotel.
