Hailing from the East Coast, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah craft intricate indie rock marked by artistic detail. The ensemble first attracted widespread online attention in the mid-2000s through its self-titled debut and later expanded its audience via releases such as Some Loud Thunder in 2007, Only Run in 2014, and The Tourist in 2017.

Formed around 2004 in Massachusetts with Alec Ounsworth serving as lead singer and songwriter, the group initially included Ounsworth handling vocals, guitars, and keyboards alongside Lee Sargent on guitars, Robbie Guertin on keyboards and guitars, Tyler Sargent on bass, and Sean Greenhalgh on drums. After relocating to Brooklyn while Ounsworth stayed in nearby Philadelphia, the members began concentrated songwriting. Their 2005 debut album, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, first built momentum through an extensive circle of bloggers and online advocates. NPR highlighted the band in a segment exploring the emerging trend of internet-driven band hype, positioning CYHSY as the central case study. Later that year, Rolling Stone further boosted visibility by naming the act a "Hot New Band."

After the debut appeared, Ounsworth explored side work with Flashy Python & the Body Snatchers, and Greenhalgh’s Guns N’ Roses tribute project Mr. Brownstone disbanded in June 2006. CYHSY issued several EPs that year before delivering the follow-up Some Loud Thunder in 2007. Amid ongoing performances and separate pursuits, including Greenhalgh’s production for acts such as Takka Takka and soundtrack contributions from the Sargent brothers, rumors of a hiatus circulated.

The band dispelled split speculation in 2011 by independently issuing its third album, Hysterical, and supporting it on tour. Two departures occurred in 2012: Guertin pursued outside endeavors, while Sargent formed a "presidential exploratory committee."

A 2013 digital-only EP introduced synths and drum machines, signaling a stylistic shift. The songs “Only Run” and “Little Moments” reappeared on the 2014 album Only Run, which included a guest appearance by Matt Berninger of the National. Greenhalgh subsequently exited, leaving Ounsworth as the only remaining member. In 2017, the Ounsworth-led Clap Your Hands Say Yeah issued the Dave Fridmann-mixed The Tourist. After touring that included solo acoustic performances, Ounsworth returned with the sixth album, New Fragility, in 2021.
