The Swedish trio Peter Bjorn and John draws strength from three skilled songwriters who also handle vocals and production duties: guitarist Peter Morén, bassist and keyboardist Björn Yttling, and drummer John Eriksson. Classic '60s Baroque pop, power pop, and new wave shaped their approach, yet they forged a distinctive sound through extended periods of live performance and studio work. Early recordings carried an energetic, punk-inflected edge, Falling Out from 2005 marked the point where their style crystallized, and Writer's Block in 2006 carried them toward wider recognition thanks to the enduring indie pop single "Young Folks." They later explored darker and more experimental territory on albums such as 2009's Living Thing while continuing to deliver catchy, energetic modern rock tracks that found placement in television, including "Second Chance" from the 2011 release Gimme Some, which became the theme for 2 Broke Girls, and that retained appeal for established listeners. Despite individual commitments that keep the members occupied beyond the group, they periodically reunite to produce polished modern rock albums such as 2018's Darker Days, highlighting their consistent abilities in songwriting, production, and performance.

Morén and Yttling had already played in bands while attending high school, though meaningful progress occurred only after they relocated to Stockholm and connected with Eriksson. The three began performing live and refining their complex, nervy approach before issuing the self-released Forbidden Chords EP in 2001. Following singles "Failing and Passing" and "I Don't Know What I Want Us to Do," Peter Bjorn and John cut their debut album in 2002 on the small Beat That! imprint. Additional concerts, further EPs including People They Know and 100m of Hurdles, and the single "See Through" preceded their move to Planekonomi in 2004, which yielded the Beats, Traps & Backgrounds EP. That project led directly into the 2004 album Falling Out, licensed for U.S. distribution by Hidden Agenda near the end of 2005 and positioning the band, together with the Concretes, the Shout Out Louds (both produced by Yttling), and the Legends, at the forefront of Sweden's wave of melodic indie pop acts.

Writer's Block, the group's third album, appeared the following year and achieved modest international success driven by the infectious single "Young Folks." Its accompanying video further raised visibility, guiding Peter Bjorn and John into a distinctly 2000s form of recognition that included a performance of the track with Kanye West at the 2007 Way Out West Festival in Gothenburg, Sweden. Once tours supporting Writer's Block concluded, the members turned to separate endeavors, among them Yttling's production assignments and Morén's 2008 solo album The Last Tycoon, before reconvening to issue the largely instrumental Seaside Rock in autumn 2008. Living Thing, their fourth studio album and a darker, more exploratory effort, arrived several months afterward in early 2009. Peter Bjorn and John returned to melodic pop with the more approachable Gimme Some in 2011.

Following that release the members again pursued independent work across numerous projects. Morén issued the Swedish-language solo album Pyramiden in 2012, Yttling sustained an active production schedule that included sessions with Chrissie Hynde and Lykke Li, and Eriksson put out two albums as Hortlax Cobra. The trio eventually regrouped to record their seventh album, enlisting Patrik Berger (Icona Pop, Robyn), Paul Epworth (Florence + the Machine, U2), Greg Kurstin (Sia, Adele), Emile Haynie (Lana Del Rey, Kanye West), and Pontus Winnberg (Miike Snow) for assistance, resulting in Breakin' Point, which INGRID issued in June 2016.

Work on the subsequent album began almost at once. Seeking a fresh method after the demanding creation of Breakin' Point, they convened at a Stockholm studio and rapidly laid down basic tracks for a new set of songs centered on darker themes. Each member then assumed responsibility for the material he had originated, layering additional instrumentation and guiding contributions from the others. The outcome, 2018's Darker Days, represented a strong return that emphasized the strength of their collaborative process. They soon initiated another album, rehearsing and tracking material together at the INGRID studio before each songwriter handled post-production on his own songs. The finished record, 2020's Endless Dream, carried a somewhat brighter tone while still admitting traces of shadow.
