Evolving out of Peter Silberman’s solitary home recordings, the Antlers swiftly matured from a sparse folk endeavor into a sweeping chamber-pop ensemble. Breakthrough success came in 2009 with their widely lauded third album Hospice, after which they sustained an output of restless, introspective work until entering a long silence following the 2014 release of Familiars. Seven years afterward they resurfaced with the milder, more unhurried textures of fifth album Green to Gold.

Silberman’s solo venture Peter Sam became the Antlers around 2006, shortly after he relocated from Katonah, New York, to Brooklyn. Before that transition he had hurriedly self-produced several projects, including Uprooted (captured right after the move), The February Tape (laid down in a bathtub in sixty minutes), In the Attic of the Universe (a lone ambient piece expanded into a full record), and Cold War (acoustic guitar and vocals only, completed inside a week). In July 2007 he began work on what would become Hospice. Over nearly two years the sessions started as another solo undertaking before drummer Michael Lerner and multi-instrumentalist Darby Cicci joined, both eventually remaining permanent members. Hospice drew strong critical praise on arrival, with prominent endorsements from NPR and Pitchfork. After touring the album the group returned to the studio for the more electronic Burst Apart, issued in 2011. Later that year the Together EP appeared, and in summer 2012 they delivered Undersea, a four-song set whose aquatic theme also informed its overall atmosphere. Familiars, released in 2014, was recorded entirely by the band inside their Brooklyn facility and later mixed by Chris Coady, whose credits include work with Beach House, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and other indie artists. Although Silberman issued a restrained solo album in 2017, new Antlers material did not surface until 2021. Sixth album Green to Gold was introduced by the warm, luminous track “Solstice.” Written spontaneously and without overthinking, its lyrics addressed gradual change and the desire to recover youthful innocence. The album arrived in March 2021 on the ANTI- label.
