Biography
My Morning Jacket first earned acclaim as fresh standard-bearers of the alt-country movement upon emerging in the late 1990s, yet they have since developed into a wide-ranging, sonically expansive unit whose recordings span indie rock, psychedelia, folk, blues, and occasional infusions of funk and prog rock. Fronted by principal songwriter and lead singer Jim James, the group’s sound draws its deepest nourishment from Americana traditions, with Neil Young, the Band, and the more hallucinatory wing of the 1960s folk movement serving as clear touchstones. At the same time, James and his collaborators have repeatedly sought to broaden their palette, incorporating fresh elements across successive releases while retaining the melodic strength and fervent vocal style that first defined them. Their 1999 debut, The Tennessee Fire, introduced a reverb-soaked indie-folk foundation that shaped the band’s early identity, while the 2003 major-label effort It Still Moves brought tighter production values and a more pop-leaning melodic focus without abandoning its rustic underpinnings. By 2008’s Evil Urges the ensemble was testing prog-rock and funk textures, further unsettling audience expectations, and the 2011 album Circuital pushed further still, letting individual tracks range from hard rock to fully orchestrated pop. Following two especially ornate and varied collections—The Waterfall in 2015 and its 2020 sequel, The Waterfall II—the band reclaimed a more earthy, introspective stance on the self-titled My Morning Jacket issued in 2021.
Vocalist and guitarist Jim James, born James Olliges and sometimes credited as Yim Yames, serves as the ensemble’s guiding force; he established the group in 1998 with cousin Johnny Quaid on guitar, bassist Tom Blankenship, and drummer J. Glenn. Based in James’s native Louisville, Kentucky, the quartet issued its first record on Darla Records in 1999, adding keyboardist Danny Cash the following year. Although The Tennessee Fire enjoyed only modest domestic notice, it achieved genuine success abroad, especially in the Netherlands. The band capitalized on that response by mounting a European tour that included a featured appearance in a Dutch documentary and praise from local critics. A Christmas EP surfaced in 2000, yet it was the follow-up, 2001’s At Dawn, that broadened their reach within the United States. James tracked his vocals inside a grain silo, producing the cavernous, reverb-saturated tone that became an early trademark. Once the album reached American listeners, childhood friend Patrick Hallahan was brought in as the new drummer.
Throughout the early 2000s the group maintained a demanding itinerary, sharing stages with Guided by Voices, Doves, and the Foo Fighters. They also moved to RCA/ATO Records for the 2003 release of It Still Moves, one of their most widely celebrated albums. Quaid and Cash departed in January 2004, replaced by keyboardist Bo Koster and guitarist Carl Broemel, and the five-piece lineup continued touring. Working with producer John Leckie, 2005’s Z stripped away much of the earlier reverb while introducing synthesizers and reggae inflections that revealed the band’s experimental inclinations; several of its songs later appeared on the 2006 live set Okonokos.
Evil Urges arrived in June 2008, highlighting James’s growing vocal range, his bandmates’ interest in Prince, and the group’s willingness to stretch the limits of alternative country-rock. After supporting the record on the road, the members turned to individual endeavors for several years: James joined the indie supergroup Monsters of Folk, and Broemel issued a solo album. They reassembled for 2011’s Circuital, capturing it in a church gymnasium and reviving the idiosyncratic, wide-ranging approach of their prior two studio efforts. In summer 2013 the band joined the Americanarama Festival of Music tour alongside Bob Dylan and Wilco. The following year they began work at Panoramic House Studios in Stinson Beach, California, pursuing greater spontaneity and absorbing the atmosphere of Northern California; the resulting The Waterfall appeared in spring 2015. Enough material remained for a second volume, which surfaced digitally as The Waterfall II in July 2020, with physical editions following in August. During the intervening half-decade the group largely paused activity while James and Broemel each released solo projects, Koster toured with Roger Waters, and several members performed with Ray LaMontagne. A short 2019 run of shows prompted new recordings, which the band tracked with James engineering to keep outside influences at bay; the self-titled My Morning Jacket was released by ATO in October 2021.
In 2022 the ensemble launched an archival concert series first issued on vinyl and later streamed. MMJ Live, Vol. 1: Live 2015 appeared in June, drawing from the tour supporting The Waterfall, while MMJ Live, Vol. 2: Chicago 2021 followed in October, preserving a November 2021 performance at Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre. That same year a limited EP, Live from RCA Studio A, captured a solo acoustic set by James performing material from the My Morning Jacket album at Nashville’s historic RCA Studios. In November 2023 the band offered fans a holiday collection, Happy Holiday!, a vinyl reissue for Record Store Day’s Black Friday that expanded the original five-song 2013 digital EP with four newly recorded tracks.
