Biography
Rogue Wave came together in 2002 after Zach Rogue, newly out of work, left his San Francisco residence, spent time with acquaintances in New York City, and came back to California carrying the bulk of what would become a textured, cerebral indie-pop album. He then stepped away from his prior outfit, the Desoto Reds, to finish the project, which appeared on his own Responsive imprint as Out of the Shadow. While wrapping the record, Rogue resolved to assemble a live ensemble and soon enlisted drummer/keyboardist Pat Spurgeon, bassist Sonya Westcott, and guitarist Gram LeBron. The quartet performed throughout 2003 alongside Spoon, Mates of State, and other prominent indie-rock acts. Their mounting profile prompted Sub Pop to ink the group and re-release Out of the Shadow in 2004.
Westcott eventually departed, with Evan Farrell taking her place, and the updated lineup commenced work on a follow-up. Their initial effort surfaced as the August 2005 single 10:1, which presented a more polished and studio-refined approach while retaining the artistic strengths of the debut. The full-length Descended Like Vultures arrived before the end of 2005. Tracks from the album surfaced on series such as Weeds, Friday Night Lights, and Heroes, and the band sustained an intense touring pace into 2006, at which point they paused when drummer Pat Spurgeon received a kidney transplant and fellow members confronted the death of LeBron’s father alongside the birth of Rogue’s daughter. Bassist Farrell also exited before dying in an apartment fire in late 2007. Patrick Abernathy, previously of Beulah, stepped in to fill the role. Contract negotiations with Sub Pop collapsed, resulting in the band’s release from the roster.
A fitting new home materialized when Jack Johnson welcomed them to his Brushfire label, which issued their third album, Asleep at Heaven’s Gate, in autumn 2007. With Cameron Jasper now on bass, Rogue Wave delivered their second Brushfire outing, Permalight, in early 2010. By the time of the subsequent record the lineup had narrowed to Rogue and Spurgeon, who had again changed imprints. Nightingale Floors emerged on Vagrant in early summer 2013. Their sixth album followed yet another label shift, this time to Easy Sound Recording Company. Delusions of Grand Fur appeared in spring 2016, featuring Rogue and Spurgeon alongside multi-instrumentalists Dan Iead, Rob Easson, and Masanori Christianson, the last primarily handling bass.
