Biography
In early-'80s England, Martin Bowes established Attrition and its darkwave/industrial ambience, predating the ethereal mystery cultivated by goth rock peers like Lycia, Black Tape for a Blue Girl, and Covenant. Independently, the group has issued more than ten albums, yet a partnership with Projekt began in 1989 through the release of the retrospective Recollection '84-'89, which marked Attrition's initial introduction to American audiences. Sam Rosenthal, founder of Projekt and frontman for Black Tape for a Blue Girl, joined Bowes five years afterward to reissue the band's earlier catalog. Opera singer Frank Dematteis collaborated with the band in 1997 on Etude, an album steeped in classical imagery. American tours ensued, leading Attrition back to its electro-industrial origins for the 1999 album The Jeopardy Maze.
