Biography

In India the rap landscape belongs overwhelmingly to one figure, Lucknow native Baba Sehgal. Far from the abrasive force of Public Enemy or Ice-T, and equally distant from linguistically transplanted rap such as the urbane French work of MC Solaar, Sehgal cultivates a mild, crowd-pleasing blend of pop and rap. He projects a playfully saccharine persona while delivering impish Hindi verses that imagine casual phone chats with Madonna. His lyrics overflow with Hinglish phrases—a cousin to Japlish, the haphazard insertion of English terms into Japanese advertising copy or apparel slogans—among them “Five star hotel,” “James Bond,” and “Madonna is a very good friend of mine.” He openly declares global superstardom as his target. Even so, his achievements stand out as one of the few instances of commercial success in India achieved outside the film-music industry.
