Born in Benares in northern India, Punjabi pop sensation Daler Mehndi launched his vocal journey at five years old. At fourteen he departed home for tutelage under uncle Raahat Ali Khan Saheb, refining his voice while mastering the tabla, harmonium, and tanpura. Following extensive classical preparation, he launched his career by performing ghazaals drawn from the verses of Qateel Shifai and Firaq Gorakhpuri. Over time he shifted focus from traditional forms to pop, achieving superstardom in 1995 when debut release Bolo Ta Ra Ra moved more than five hundred thousand units inside four months and became the highest-selling non-soundtrack album in Indian chart history. The project also secured Channel V's Best Male Pop Singer Award, an accolade repeated for 1996's Dard Di Rab Rab and 1997's Ho Jayegi Bale Bale. Screen roles in Mrityudata and Arjun Pundit further amplified his reach, prompting sold-out concerts worldwide. Ho Jayegi Balle Balle arrived in 1999.
