Alannah Currie, born September 28, 1957 in New Zealand, joins Englishman Tom Bailey, born January 18, 1956, to create the duo Babble. The pair had previously constituted the Thompson Twins, a dance-rock band whose seven albums reached the U.S. charts from 1982 to 1989, with the million-selling Top Ten success Into the Gap (1984) marking their peak and spotlighting the group's biggest single, "Hold Me Now" (#3). Shifting to a six-piece lineup that incorporated Indian and new age influences, they issued their first release under the Babble name, The Stone, in 1994. Ether arrived two years afterward.
