Biography
Paul Kossoff, the guitarist formerly of Free, titled his solo album Back Street Crawler in 1973 and subsequently assembled a band under that identical name in 1975. The ensemble included vocalist Terry Wilson-Slessor, keyboardist Mike Montgomery, bassist Terry Wilson, and drummer Tony Braunagel. With this configuration the group issued The Band Plays On, though Kossoff succumbed to an apparent heart attack on March 19, 1976. A follow-up album, 2nd Street, nevertheless appeared; afterward the lineup underwent reorganization when Montgomery left and John "Rabbit" Bundrick took his place, guitarist Geoff Whiteborn joined the ranks, and the ensemble adopted the new moniker Crawler. In 1977 the reconfigured band delivered its self-titled third album, followed by the final release Snake, Rattle and Roll the next year.
