Biography
The enduring influence of the late Cajun fiddler Dewey Balfa persists in the performances of daughters Nelda and Christine through their ensemble Balfa Toujours. Drawing from Cajun music’s acoustic traditions, the musicians blend bayou textures with spirited drive and the close-knit feel of informal gatherings.
Although the sisters picked up guitar in childhood and often joined sessions alongside their father and uncles, they never envisioned a professional path until Dewey’s death in 1992. His loss led them to craft original songs as a means of processing grief. After completing nine pieces, they made a private recording for relatives; its warm reception prompted them to commit to a standing band. Al Tharpe of Beausoleil produced their first release, Pop, Tu Me Parles Toujours, which appeared in 1993.
Nelda Balfa stepped away after the 1994 arrival of A Vielle Terre Haute to concentrate on hairdressing, though she still joins select local shows while keeping her role limited. La Pointe emerged in 1998, followed two years later by the concert set Live At Whiskey River Landing.
