Emerging as a prime example of London's post-acid house collective, the Ballistic Brothers merge the skills of leading lights from the progressive house and acid jazz worlds—namely Ashley Beedle from Black Science Orchestra, Dave Hill of Nuphonic Records, along with the house-tech pair Rocky and Diesel. Their output blends hip-hop, house, jazz, and soul elements, creating a sound that invariably signals celebration regardless of the venue. Most of their early releases appeared on the London club mainstay Junior Boys Own, among them the 1994 debut album London Hooligan Soul, before the outfit launched the Soundboy imprint in 1996 for the succeeding record Rude System. A journey to Jamaica by Dave Hill right before the sessions prompted the album's conceptual and stylistic shift, prompting the collective to undertake a remix endeavor—echoing Mad Professor's reinterpretation of Massive Attack's 1995 album Protection—within Bob Marley's Kingston facility. Solo ventures from the members encompass X-Press 2, Free Soul, Low Pressing Records, Blacker, Ill Sun Records, Yellow Sox, and the Uschi Classen band.
