In the Philippines, Barbie's Cradle emerged from the remnants of Hungry Young Poets, whose lineup had featured vocalist and guitarist Barbie Almalbis, drummer Franklin Benitez, and bassist Ricci Gurango. After three years of work as a unit and the release of Hungry Young Poets singles "Firewoman" and "Torpe," the original group dissolved. Gurango launched a separate project, whereas Benitez and Almalbis continued their collaboration by forming Barbie's Cradle and adding Rommel Dela Cruz on bass. Warner Music Philippines released the band's self-titled debut album in 1999. That twelve-track collection produced the singles "Goodnyt," "Tabing Ilog," and "The Dance." The following year the label issued Music From the Buffet Table, an album containing fourteen songs and one hidden track along with a Tagalog-language cover of Hotdog's "Langit Na Naman." Barbie's Cradle's rendition also appears on a BMG tribute album to Hotdog.
