Biography
Parokya Ni Edgar (Parish of Edgar) serve as the Philippines' leading jesters by crafting witty pop-punk tracks that frequently explore unusual topics. Six students at Manila's Ateneo High School formed the group: vocalist Chito Miranda, back-up singer and dancer Vinci Montaner, guitarists Darius Semana and Gab CheeKee, bassist Buwi Meneses, and drummer Dindin Moreno. Initially operating under the name Comic Relief, the members focused on parody versions of familiar songs. Club Dredd, Manila's premier venue for alternative sounds, hosted their first performances in 1994, where eccentric costumes and playful stage behavior quickly turned the act into neighborhood favorites. Richard Tan, who managed the Philippine punk outfits the Youth and Teeth, helped secure their contract with Universal. The Youth's Robert Javier oversaw production of the 1996 debut KHANGKHUNGKHERRNitZ The Album, which reached platinum status within six months. Yet the popularity of the track "Buloy" later created lasting discomfort, since its central character—a real-life acquaintance of the band—died by suicide in a manner matching the lyrics after the song's release and widespread success. Even so, the musicians' irreverent approach, which involved borrowing melodies from the Clash and Bob Dylan before pairing them with humorous Tagalog words, drew support from both mainstream listeners and their core underground audience. Their follow-up full-length BURUGUDUYSTUNSTUGUDUNSTUY arrived a year later and mixed more earnest themes with the comedic elements of the prior release. Another contentious success came with "Please Don't Touch My Birdie," whose lyrics carried an explicit double meaning. Observers began positioning the group as successors to the Eraserheads, the Filipino rock act that achieved superstar status at home. The video for "Harana" earned the Asian Viewers' Choice honor at the 1999 MTV awards in New York City. The band completed a U.S. tour in 2002.
