Biography
Originating from Bristol, England, Beatnik Filmstars entered the indie rock scene through their 1991 album Maharishi, issued on Big Sky Records. Fronted by singer/songwriter/guitarist Andrew Jarrett, the group drew immediate comparisons to leading American indie rock acts. A string of EPs preceded their next full-length outing, the 1993 CD Laid Back & English on Land Speed Records. Astronaut House followed in 1994 via La Di Da Records. Two years later, California's Slumberland Records teamed with Mobstar Records for the Beezer album. Phase 3 surfaced in 1997 on Mobstar and No Life Records, while Scratch Records simultaneously released the All Pop Stars Are Talentless Slags EP. That same year Merge Records signed the band, resulting in the In Hospitalable CD, with Boss Disque arriving in 1998. Extensive multi-tracking on Boss Disque signaled the start of an inventive phase in the band's development. Steady EP output across multiple labels sustained their visibility for the duration of their career.
