Biography
Benjamin Zephaniah entered the world on April 15, 1958, as a novelist, playwright, poet, actor, and vocal activist whose childhood unfolded across Jamaica and Birmingham, England. He composed verse from an early age yet struggled with dyslexia and abandoned conventional education while still a young teen. After relocating to London in 1979, he brought out his debut poetry collection, Pen Rhythm, in 1980. His recording career began with the 1983 album Rasta, followed by Us an Dem in 1984, Back to Roots in 1995, and Belly of de Beast in 1996. An exceptionally productive author, Zephaniah earned honorary doctorates from several English universities, served as Writer in Residence at the University of Cambridge, and appeared on the shortlist for the 2005 British Book Awards Decibel Writer of the Year. In 2003 he declined a nomination for the Order of the British Empire, outlining his objections in a letter published by The Guardian. He returned with the 2006 album Naked, setting his poems to dub and trip-hop rhythms. Not long afterward he received a brain tumor diagnosis, and he passed away on December 7, 2023.
