Stephen Wilkinson, recording as Bibio, fuses electronic, folk, hip-hop, and rock textures into immersive soundscapes marked by atmospheric experimentation. Early releases such as the 2006 album Hand Cranked presented a lo-fi aesthetic built from acoustic guitars, analog synths, and field recordings that evoked nostalgic outdoor memories. Over time his work grew more focused and wide-ranging, with the 2009 album Ambivalence Avenue drawing from J Dilla, Marcos Valle, and 1970s television themes. Further projects highlighted additional facets of his approach: the 2017 ambient album Phantom Brickworks and its 2024 follow-up Phantom Brickworks (LP II) emphasized intricate sonic environments, whereas the 2022 release Bib10, joined by the 2023 EP Sunbursting, centered guitar-driven blends of funk, soft rock, and Brazilian music.

Raised in England’s West Midlands, Wilkinson absorbed Queen and Pink Floyd through car rides with his father and later tried to replicate those sounds on his Bontempi organ at home. During his teenage years he embraced the energy of Guns N’ Roses and Iron Maiden, then encountered electronic music through skateboarding in the mid-1990s. He pursued sonic arts studies at Middlesex University in London, where Aphex Twin, Autechre, and Boards of Canada sparked his interest, though he also developed a deep appreciation for mid-20th-century British folk traditions. These strands merged with found sounds and field recordings to form his signature organic-electronic hybrid. Marcus Eoin of Boards of Canada passed Wilkinson’s demos to Mush Records, which issued the 2004 debut Fi and its 2006 successor Hand Cranked. He also put out the limited-edition Sheila Sets Sail/Tribio on the Artist’s Valley imprint, a collective shared with producers Andy Harber and Richard Roberts. The 2008 Ovals and Emeralds EP replaced his customary acoustic guitars with organ, while Vignetting the Compost appeared in 2009.

Later that year Bibio signed with Warp and delivered the June release Ambivalence Avenue, an eclectic set that merged ambient pop with precise electro and hip-hop sampling and reached the U.S. Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart’s Top 20. November brought the remix collection The Apple and the Tooth. On the 2011 album Mind Bokeh—titled after the photographic term for an out-of-focus region—Wilkinson extended that direction, attaining number six on the U.S. Heatseekers Albums chart, number 195 on the U.K. Albums Chart, and placing the single “Lover’s Carvings” at number 170 on the U.K. Singles Chart.

The May 2013 album Silver Wilkinson balanced pastoral elements with experimental electronics and again charted inside the U.S. Top Dance/Electronic Albums Top 20. Early 2014 saw the Green EP, which paired “Dye the Water Green” from Silver Wilkinson with previously unreleased older tracks, while Wilkinson’s original score for Jason Reitman’s film Men, Women & Children also surfaced that year. April 2016’s A Mineral Love explored nostalgic textures inspired by 1970s and 1980s television themes alongside 1990s dance music; although its sounds suggested sampling, the album comprised entirely new recordings by Wilkinson and guests including Gotye and Wax Stag, peaking at number nine on the U.S. Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart. The track “Why So Serious?” expanded into the Serious EP with added collaborations featuring vocalist Olivier St. Louis. Also in 2016, Bibio joined Mark Pritchard and Clark on the single “Health Town.” The 2017 Beyond Serious EP reunited Bibio with St. Louis on material inspired by mid- to late-1990s French house.

The 2017 full-length Phantom Brickworks assembled a decade of improvised ambient works that conjured real and imagined locations through texture and atmosphere, later yielding the 2018 EP Phantom Brickworks (IV & V). In April 2019, marking a decade with Warp, Wilkinson issued his ninth album Ribbons, his most acoustic-oriented work in years and incorporating mandolin, fiddle, vintage psychedelia, and soul. The following June brought the largely instrumental companion Sleep on the Wing, extending Ribbons’ pastoral qualities.

Warp secured rights to the earlier Mush catalog in 2020 and reissued those recordings across the next two years, adding bonus tracks—including some of Wilkinson’s earliest material—to the digital edition of Hand Cranked. Bibio returned in July 2021 with the Vidiconia EP, a collection of improvised ambient pieces echoing Phantom Brickworks. October 2022’s Bib10 shifted focus once more, celebrating his tenth album by evoking the polished warmth of 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s productions built on vintage guitar foundations. Two 2023 releases expanded that project: March’s S.O.L. EP collected remixes of the Bib10 track by Alan Braxe along with contributions from the Bibio alter egos 81010 and Champagne Eagle, while September’s Sunbursting EP delved further into Brazilian, yacht rock, and R&B influences with input from Bib10 vocalist Oliver St. Louis and tenor saxophonist Óskar Guðjónsson. A deluxe edition of Ambivalence Avenue arrived in 2024 with three bonus tracks marking the album’s fifteenth anniversary, followed later that year by Phantom Brickworks (LP II), which broadened the project’s evocative depictions of deserted spaces.
