Biography
Keith Kenniff helms the downtempo and ambient electronic endeavor known as Helios while maintaining a parallel identity as the neo-classical composer Goldmund. His Helios material characteristically blends atmospheric synthesizer layers, deliberate glitch-inflected rhythms, and delicate melodic lines drawn from piano, guitar, and assorted acoustic sources. Once the project’s distinctive aesthetic and dedicated audience took hold—most notably through the 2006 release Eingya—Kenniff began receiving frequent scoring commissions across cinema, television, and commercials. He has continued releasing material at a steady pace under both Helios and Goldmund, while also recording shoegaze-inflected indie pop with his spouse Hollie Kenniff under the name Mint Julep. After Caesura appeared in 2008, the majority of subsequent Helios albums came out on his own Unseen Records, among them Unleft in 2010 and Yume in 2015; since 2018 the project has issued its recordings on Ghostly International, the most recent being the guitar-driven Espera in 2023.
Kenniff grew up in rural Pennsylvania and first took up drums, guitar, and bass before discovering the piano during his percussion studies at Boston’s Berklee College of Music. He began producing music under the Helios moniker in 2001; after sharing early tracks on his personal blog, he issued the debut album Unomia on the IDM imprint Merck in 2004. The following year he debuted his solo piano work as Goldmund on the Type label, which also began releasing his Helios output with the 2006 album Eingya. That record found favor with listeners drawn to downtempo acts such as Boards of Canada and Tycho and was succeeded by the 2007 mini-album Ayres, the sole Helios release to feature Kenniff’s vocals. Caesura, the project’s last Type outing and its most rhythm-oriented statement to date, followed in 2008.
Unleft, comprising previously unheard recordings, surfaced on Unseen Records in 2010 alongside the live document Live at the Triple Door. The ambient mini-album Moiety arrived as a digital release in 2012, with Remixed appearing later the same year. After devoting several years primarily to raising his son, Kenniff returned with Yume in 2015 and the EP Remembrance in 2016. Veriditas marked Helios’ first full-length for Ghostly International in 2018, although the label had earlier included a Goldmund piece on the SMM: Context compilation. Domicile, an album that deliberately reexamines the notion of background music, was released in late 2020, and the buoyant yet understated Espera appeared in 2023.
