Biography
Originating in Springfield, Missouri, Big Smith fuses bluegrass, gospel, and acoustic country elements with Southern-inflected rock & roll, creating an upbeat, wide-ranging style that has built a devoted following across the South and Midwest through steady road work and high-energy performances. The group came together in 1996 as a close-knit family unit comprising brothers Mark Bilyeu on guitar and Jody Bilyeu on mandolin and keyboards, along with cousins Jay Williamson on percussion and Mike Williamson on bass; sound engineer Rik Thomas serves as the fifth member and shares the same family ties. Drawing from the Appalachian gospel and dance traditions of their upbringing, the musicians initially operated as an acoustic hillbilly quartet, yet electric guitars, keyboards, and occasional horns gradually entered the mix while Thomas came aboard to manage the expanding tour demands and sometimes participate in stage jams. On their independent MayApple Records imprint, the band issued four albums during its first seven years, including the studio releases Big Smith and Big Rock plus the contrasting live sets Big Smith Family and Friends Live at Lonestar, which focuses on vintage Appalachian gospel material, and the energetic two-disc Gig that captures a representative concert.
