Biography
Hailing from Michigan, Greensky Bluegrass built a wide-ranging, powerful sound that carried the regional D.I.Y. outfit from local stages to national recognition by the late 2000s, following persistent road work and a string of carefully produced self-released recordings. The musicians approached longstanding Americana forms with an inquisitive, forward-looking approach, noting that they reached bluegrass by unconventional routes and crediting rock sources as their entry point into acoustic traditions. Through the 2014 chart-topping release If Sorrows Swim and the 2016 album Shouted, Written Down & Quoted, the group sustained its blend of rock drive and grounded string-band energy. After issuing multiple archival concert collections, the ensemble reemerged in early 2022 with the wide-ranging Stress Dreams.
Guitarist Dave Bruzza, mandolinist Paul Hoffman, and banjo player Michael Arlen Bont established Greensky Bluegrass in autumn 2000 and spent several years performing informally in their Kalamazoo hometown at parties and open mikes as they refined their style. Their first album, Less Than Supper, appeared in early 2004; bassist Mike Devol joined later that year, allowing the group to broaden its touring calendar. The pivotal year 2006 brought victory in the band contest at Colorado’s Telluride Bluegrass Festival, which secured a main-stage appearance the next summer. Following the second album, Tuesday Letter, dobroist Anders Beck entered the lineup and finalized its enduring configuration.
In the ensuing period Greensky Bluegrass issued a third studio set plus assorted live documents, maintained an intensive touring pace, and shared bills with acts such as Béla Fleck & the Flecktones, Sam Bush, Yonder Mountain String Band, and the Avett Brothers. That steady effort produced the breakthrough fourth studio album Handguns in 2011, which entered the Billboard bluegrass chart at number three. Capitalizing on the momentum, the band intensified its schedule and performed at major festivals including Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.
If Sorrows Swim, the fifth album, reached listeners in September 2014 and opened at number one on the bluegrass chart. Two years afterward the group delivered Shouted, Written Down & Quoted on its own Big Blue Zoo imprint. The seventh studio album, All for Money, arrived in January 2019 via Nashville’s Thirty Tigers distribution and placed at number 17 on Billboard’s Top Independent Albums chart.
Renowned for relentless touring, Greensky Bluegrass met the COVID-19 pandemic and ensuing lockdowns by capturing a sequence of livestream performances that later appeared as the digital five-volume set The Leap Year Sessions. Archival releases continued through 2021 with Courage for the Road, a three-volume series drawn from pre-shutdown concerts. The band resumed studio activity with the 2022 cerebral LP Stress Dreams.
