Hailing from Portland, Oregon, Fruition took shape in the early 2010s as a lively five-piece Americana outfit whose folk-rock foundation incorporated soul, bluegrass, and country accents. Across their opening ten years the group issued a string of favorably received albums and EPs, among them Watching It All Fall Apart in 2018 and the two-part 2020 release that combined into Wild as the Night, Broken at the Break of Day. After pandemic lockdowns halted their schedule, the musicians reconvened in the studio to capture a completely live recording, How to Make Mistakes, issued in 2024.

The band originated in 2008 when Jay Cobb (vocals/guitar/harmonica), Kellen Asebroek (vocals/guitar/piano), and Mimi Naja (vocals/mandolin/guitar) converged in Portland from separate regions of the United States. Having honed their craft through street performances, they added bassist Jeff Leonard and drummer Tyler Thompson to complete the lineup. Their first project, Hawthorne Hoedown, emphasized roots-oriented string textures in keeping with its title. Over time Fruition expanded their rock leanings while sharpening songcraft, a direction fully realized on the self-titled Fruition that appeared in 2010 and displayed a polished style reminiscent of Greensky Bluegrass, Railroad Earth, Lake Street Dive, Edward Sharpe, and the Lumineers. It Won't Be Long followed in 2012 and Just One of Them Nights arrived the next year. Following the Holehearted Fools EP, the quartet delivered Labor of Love, their fourth album, which wove extended jam passages into their established rustic approach. Watching It All Fall Apart, released in 2018 as their fifth full-length, included the singles “Northern Town” and “Turn to Dust” and showcased a shift toward electric production helmed by Tucker Martine (My Morning Jacket, the Decemberists, First Aid Kit). Returning swiftly to the studio, the band issued their next album in two installments that later formed the complete Wild as the Night, Broken at the Break of Day; the self-produced set surfaced in early 2020 and spotlighted the breakout track “Dawn.”

Momentum was interrupted when the global pandemic halted the group’s constant touring. Fruition eventually reassembled and refined their process, resulting in the four-year interval before their subsequent studio effort. The warm and open-hearted How to Make Mistakes appeared in August 2024. Once more self-produced, the album stood out as the first recorded entirely live in the studio without overdubs, traversing the full spectrum of the band’s electric folk-rock numbers and relaxed acoustic material.
