Biography
Black Umfolosi, a multi-discipline performing arts ensemble, safeguards the heritage of Africa by means of a cappella vocal harmonies, genuine traditional attire, and indigenous dance practices. Students from Bulawayao’s George Slundika School, located in the capital of the Ndebele-speaking region, established the group and adopted its name from the Black Umfolosi Regiment, a body of 19th-century Zulu revolutionaries. Although the ensemble customarily appears as 18 members, it periodically augments its ranks with a 900-voice choir. Alongside a busy calendar of live engagements, the collective sustains ongoing educational work through workshops and residencies devoted to dance, vocals, theater, costume design, poetry, and mime. After being named most popular artist at Canada’s Commonwealth Games in 1994, Black Umfolosi completed tours of North America, Australia, and Europe in both 1996 and 1998.
