U.K. quartet Blue swiftly established themselves on the British charts in 2001 through a succession of carefully constructed pop and R&B releases. Their debut album, All Rise, appeared near the close of that year, setting the stage for the group to top the U.K. pop listings with the follow-up efforts One Love in 2002 and Guilty in 2003, after which they entered a period of inactivity. A decade on, by then firmly embedded in British pop culture, Blue returned with three further albums, among them Heart & Soul in 2022.

Duncan James and Antony Costa, having first crossed paths while pursuing auditions, resolved to assemble their own band in early 2000. They soon joined forces with Lee Ryan, another acquaintance from the same circuit, and Ryan’s flatmate Simon Webbe, a former professional footballer. A contract with Innocent Records followed, placing the four members alongside multiple songwriting and production teams. Their opening single, “All Rise,” penned by the Norwegian production outfit Stargate and drawn from the album of the same title, entered the U.K. singles chart at number four in May 2001 and remained in the Top Ten for several weeks. The group’s rendition of Next’s American number-one hit “Too Close” and the track “If You Come Back” both reached the summit in August and November, respectively. All Rise itself, which blended rock and funk textures with pop ballads and up-tempo R&B numbers, debuted at number four on the album chart. Commercial momentum was confirmed when One Love opened at the top of the U.K. album listings in November 2002. The band reclaimed the singles summit the next month by teaming with Elton John on a refreshed reading of his “Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word.”

Guilty, their third album, sustained the pattern of success throughout 2003; its singles “Guilty,” “Breathe Easy,” and a cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I’m Yours” featuring Wonder alongside Angie Stone each placed inside the U.K. Top 20. A 2004 compilation introduced the new song “Curtain Falls,” and once the supporting tour concluded the quartet declared an indefinite break. Lee Ryan and Simon Webbe each issued solo albums the following year.

Blue resurfaced in 2009 for a performance at Silverstone Classic, prompting speculation of new material. Although no album materialized that year or the next, the band re-emerged in 2011 with “I Can,” the entry chosen to represent the U.K. at the Eurovision Song Contest. Despite failing to win the final, fan support encouraged further recording. While on stage in China during summer 2012, the members premiered “Hurt Lovers” and confirmed in October that a fourth studio album, Roulette, was forthcoming. In early 2013 Blue joined fellow U.K. pop acts including Honeyz and Liberty X on The Big Reunion tour, then issued Roulette, which contained the single “Without You,” that April. Two years later the group secured a Sony deal for their fifth album, Colours. Mixing covers with original songs, the set entered the U.K. charts at number 13. Afterward the members resumed solo pursuits—James and Costa turned to acting, while Webbe and Ryan released individual material—yet continued to tour the U.K. together.

In 2021 Blue marked the twentieth anniversary of their debut record by scheduling a series of U.K. arena shows for the year ahead. They also returned to the studio, resulting in the release of their sixth album, Heart & Soul, at the end of 2022.
