Kenny Wayne Shepherd, a blues-rock guitarist and songwriter, rocketed to prominence while still young and has issued a steady stream of successful records from the mid-1990s forward that spotlight his forceful, hard-charging fusion of country and blues. His debut, Ledbetter Heights, arrived in 1995 and drew enormous radio play plus press coverage en route to the top of the blues charts and platinum certification. Multiple follow-up albums also climbed to the summit of the blues rankings, while several singles—including the fiery 1998 track “Blue on Black”—became radio staples. Goin’ Home in 2014 not only claimed the number-one blues spot but also entered the Top 100 on the U.S. album charts. Into the 2020s Shepherd continued racking up additional Billboard Blues chart-toppers, refining and broadening his approach during that span and culminating in the soul-steeped 2023 release Dirt on My Diamonds, Vol. 1.

Born June 12, 1977, in Shreveport, Louisiana, Shepherd picked up the guitar at age seven by teaching himself Muddy Waters phrases from his father’s record collection, never having taken formal lessons. At thirteen he joined New Orleans bluesman Bryan Lee onstage and held his own for hours, prompting him to commit to music professionally. He assembled his own band, fronted by vocalist Corey Sterling, and built early momentum through club gigs and later radio conventions.

His father and manager leveraged industry connections and flair to secure the teenager a major-label contract with Giant Records; Ledbetter Heights reached stores two years later in 1995 and sold more than 500,000 copies by early 1996—an uncommon commercial feat for blues releases, especially those by teenage artists. Having performed alongside and absorbed influences from guitarists Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert King, Slash, Robert Cray, and Duane Allman, Shepherd excels in live settings. Ledbetter Heights also stands out for its stylistic breadth, encompassing acoustic blues, rock-driven blues, Texas blues, and Louisiana blues.

Trouble Is…, issued in 1998, earned a Grammy nomination, and Live On appeared the following year. The Place You’re In came out on Reprise Records in 2004 and marked the first album on which Shepherd handled most lead vocals, after singer Noah Hunt had taken the lead on the prior two records. For his next endeavor Shepherd traveled the American South with a documentary crew and portable studio, backing veteran blues artists on their home ground; the resulting album and film, 10 Days Out: Blues from the Backroads, surfaced in 2007, followed by Live! In Chicago in 2010. That November he sat in with Jimmy Fallon’s house band on television, playing the same Fender Stratocaster Jimi Hendrix had used at Woodstock.

Although Shepherd remained active in the years between, How I Go in 2011 marked his first proper studio album in seven years. Seeking to recapture the commercial spark of Trouble Is…, he again enlisted Noah Hunt on vocals and brought in former Talking Heads keyboardist and guitarist Jerry Harrison, who had produced the platinum-selling earlier album. Shepherd next delivered Goin’ Home in 2014, a tribute to his musical heroes that included contributions from Ringo Starr and Keb’ Mo’. The Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band resurfaced in 2017 with Lay It on Down, recorded at Echophone Studios in Shreveport, Louisiana, and became his eighth release to top the blues charts.

In late 2018 Shepherd entered a Los Angeles studio alongside his band, vocalist Noah Hunt, drummer Chris Layton (formerly of Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble and Johnny Winter And), bassist Kevin McCormick, and keyboardists Jimmy McGorman and Joe Krown. The single “Woman Like You” preceded the full-length The Traveler, issued at the end of May 2019 on Provogue and marking his first album for the label. He made his Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival debut later that summer. The following year yielded the live CD/DVD package Straight to You Live, captured in Germany.

Shepherd marked the 25th anniversary of Trouble Is… with Trouble Is..25, a re-recording of the 1997 album with its original producer. He followed that project quickly with Dirt on My Diamonds, Vol. 1, a soulful set largely tracked at the historic FAME studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.
