Biography
Guitarist and songwriter Devon Allman, offspring of musician Gregg Allman, grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas. He fronts Devon Allman's Honeytribe, a band whose initial lineup formed in 1999. The group's hard-edged, spacious blues-based rock, delivered through intense live performances, rapidly turned them into local favorites and earned the Riverfront Times Jam Band of the Year award. Following demo sessions and festival appearances, Allman dissolved the lineup to focus on his newborn son at home, though he kept performing solo acoustic sets across local and regional stages while continuing to compose material. In 2002 he contributed guest vocals to Pinkeye d'Gekko's Rhythm & Westrn, and the next year he joined Randy Cash, Brian Breckle, and Mark Oyarzabal to record Somewhere Between Day and Night under the name Ocean Six.
Honeytribe reassembled in 2005 with its founding members intact. They cut Torch the following year and launched an extensive touring campaign that reached 300 shows annually across 42 states and ten countries, establishing them as festival staples worldwide. Guest spots followed on Paris Luna's City Lights in 2007, then on both Love, Union, Peace and Flamenco Blues Experience with Javier Vargas' Vargas Blues Band alongside Jack Bruce, Reese Wynans, and additional players in 2008, along with various festival dates and appearances on MTV Europe.
Seeking a fresh direction, Allman reduced Honeytribe to a power trio in 2008, retaining bassist George Potsos and adding drummer Gabriel Strange. This configuration released Space Age Blues in fall 2010. His subsequent venture formed the blues-rock and jam-band supergroup Royal Southern Brotherhood, featuring Allman and Mike Zito on guitars, bassist Charlie Wooton from Zydefunk, and drummer Yonrico Scott, formerly of Derek Trucks' band. The quintet delivered its self-titled debut in 2012. Demonstrating continued restlessness, Allman issued his first dedicated solo songwriter album, Turquoise, in early 2013, supported by Scott and bassist Myles Weeks. That year also included Royal Southern Brotherhood road work and the concert audio-video package Songs from the Road: Live in Germany. Early 2014 sessions produced the follow-up studio album HeartSoulBlood, issued by Ruf in June.
Allman used breaks from the supergroup for solo performances and finally realized a long-planned project in a Chicago studio alongside veteran blues players drawn from the bands of Luther Allison, Buddy Guy, Charlie Musselwhite, and others. The resulting Ragged & Dirty appeared in October 2014 and revealed a markedly different facet of his artistry. In 2015 he appeared on Jeremiah Johnson's Grind and Gregg Allman's Live: Back to Macon, GA. Returning to independent recording in 2016, he released Ride or Die on Ruf that fall.
