Biography
A roots-rock collective based in New Orleans, the Revivalists came together in 2007 and began building momentum during the first years of the following decade. Their sound draws most deeply from Southern soul and blues traditions yet incorporates a forward-looking pulse that accommodates funk and modern dance rhythms without losing its acoustic warmth. The group’s sophomore release, City of Sound, entered the Billboard charts in spring 2014 after Wind-Up Records reissued it, setting the stage for their commercial breakthrough the next year via the hit single “Wish I Knew You.” They later moved to Loma Vista for the 2018 album Take Good Care and issued the fervent, uplifting Pour It Out Into the Night in 2023—their debut for Concord—before a deluxe edition arrived in 2024 stocked with live recordings and the new single “Zombie (Wild Coming Out).”
Vocalist David Shaw, guitarist Zack Feinberg, pedal steel player Ed Williams, bassist George Gekas, drummer Andrew Campanelli, saxophonist Rob Ingraham, and keyboardist/trumpeter Michael Girardot established themselves in late-2000s New Orleans through a fusion of rock, R&B, soul, country, and funk, issuing a self-titled EP in 2008. Vital Signs, their first full-length effort, followed in 2010 and earned favorable notices when the band opened for the Rebirth Brass Band while maintaining a relentless schedule of tours and festival dates. Ben Ellman produced the second album, City of Sound, which surfaced independently in 2012. The following year the group signed with Wind-Up Records and began work on a third studio project; Wind-Up’s spring 2014 re-release of City of Sound placed it on the lower half of the Billboard 200. Men Amongst Mountains, recorded straight to tape and released in July 2015, became their third long-player and yielded the hit single “Wish I Knew You.”
After raising their profile, the Revivalists secured a new agreement with Loma Vista and returned in 2018 with “All My Friends,” the lead single from Take Good Care. That same year they issued a limited-edition vinyl single, “Shoot You Down” b/w “You and I,” with proceeds benefiting Everytown for Gun Safety. At Fame Recording Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama—site of numerous landmark 1960s soul sessions—they cut the seven-track EP Made in Muscle Shoals, released January 2020 and comprising six original songs plus a cover of the Bee Gees classic “To Love Somebody.”
Following the touring shutdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Revivalists resumed an intensive road schedule in 2022 and returned to Muscle Shoals to record the 2022 EP Made in Muscle Shoals, Vol. 2, which contained six new originals. Subsequent touring paved the way for their next studio album, Pour It Out Into the Night, issued in June 2023 on Concord Records and introduced by the upbeat survival anthem “Kid.” By then the lineup had grown from seven to eight members with the addition of percussionist P.J. Howard. Concord issued a deluxe edition of Pour It Out Into the Night late in 2024, appending numerous bonus tracks including the newly recorded single “Zombie (Wild Coming Out).”
