Moon Taxi formed in 2006 as a Nashville-based five-piece rooted in jam and alternative rock while its members were still students at Belmont University. The band established its own imprint, 12th South Records, and delivered its debut album, Melodica, in 2007. Trevor Terndrup on vocals, Spencer Thomson on guitar, Tommy Putnam on bass, Wes Bailey on keyboards, and Tyler Ritter on drums sustained momentum through relentless live work, issuing the concert document Live Ride in 2008 and returning to the studio for Cabaret in 2012.

Distribution through BMG supported the 2013 release Mountains Beaches Cities, which secured television and advertising placements, first late-night network appearances including Late Show with David Letterman, and festival slots at Bonnaroo, the Governor's Ball, and Lollapalooza. Daybreaker followed in October 2015, trailed by the live album New Year's Eve 2015 in 2016.

The early-2017 single "Two High" previewed a brighter, pop-focused direction that defined Let the Record Play, issued by RCA in January 2018. After aligning fully with BMG as their primary label, the group maintained that sonic trajectory on Silver Dream, released in 2021.
