Biography
New Politics burst forth as a high-octane alternative rock ensemble tracing roots from Denmark to Brooklyn, weaving together punk, pop, rap, and electronic dance-rock into a fluid mix. The trio surfaced in 2009 and swiftly gained traction through the singles “Yeah Yeah Yeah” and “Harlem,” both featured in major video games and advertising campaigns. Following the July 2010 release of their self-titled debut album, they delivered several critically praised major-label records, highlighted by the chart-topping A Bad Girl in Harlem in 2013, before signing with Big Noise Records for the polished 2019 effort An Invitation to an Alternate Reality.
The group coalesced in Amsterdam during the late 2000s, centered on vocalist David Boyd, guitarist/vocalist/keyboard player Søren Hansen, and drummer Poul Amaliel. Their energetic style—amplified by Boyd’s wildly unpredictable stage presence—drew the attention of RCA, which inked a deal with the band in 2009. To avoid fading into obscurity stateside, New Politics shifted base to Brooklyn, New York, where they unveiled their debut full-length that summer. Their follow-up, A Bad Girl in Harlem, arrived in 2013, with the track “Harlem” landing key placements in a Taco Bell commercial, multiple trailers for the film Frozen, and the Guitar Hero Live video game.
Transitioning to the Warner Bros.-affiliated imprint DCD2 Records, New Politics issued their third album, Vikings, toward the end of 2015. After two years of relentless touring, they dropped the uplifting single “One of Us” in early 2017, followed by the full-length Lost in Translation that October. In 2019 the band put out its fifth studio album, An Invitation to an Alternate Reality, folding rap and contemporary pop textures into its sound.
