Throughout much of the 2000s, Andrew McMahon served as pianist and singer/songwriter at the helm of the alt-rock ensemble Something Corporate before shifting focus to his more pop-inflected solo outlet Jack's Mannequin, which welcomed guest spots from numerous skilled musician friends. His initial batch of material issued under his own name, the Pop Underground EP, surfaced in 2013. Retaining the familiar warm, upbeat atmosphere that defined his earlier work, the release marked the first occasion McMahon leaned primarily on electronics and synthesizers. The following year brought his inaugural full-length effort, issued eponymously under the Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness banner. After joining Weezer and Panic! At the Disco for a summer 2016 tour, he unveiled the single "Fire Escape" once the dates concluded. Serving as the initial preview of his sophomore album Zombies on Broadway, the track preceded the February 2017 arrival of that project. In October 2018 McMahon offered the nostalgic single "Teenage Rockstars" in advance of the full-length Upside Down Flowers, which followed in November.
